Visitation and services for Josefina M. Bunn, “Nena,” 95, will begin at 11 a.m. with mass following on Monday, October 28, 2024, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Gladewater, with Fr. Francis O’Dowd officiating.
Mrs. Bunn, known by family and friends as “Nena”, was the daughter of the late Jose and Rosario Montilla. She was born April 6, 1929 in Manila, Philippines. She attended the University of Santo Tomas in Manila and was employed as a diamond appraiser before coming to the United States. She was reared in the Philippines and her family originally came from Spain. Her great-great grandfather was the private secretary to Queen Isabella II of Spain. Her father was the Director of the Bureau of Fisheries of the Philippines, a Presidential appointment. She survived the Japanese invasion of the Philippines in World War II. Nena met her husband Glen when he was stationed in the Philippines during his tenure with the US Navy. They eventually moved to Gilmer. Nena was a member of Saint Theresa’s Catholic Church in Gladewater and Gilmer’s Bluebonnet Literary Club.
She assisted her husband in many of the functions of Gilmer Hospital, Ford Memorial Hospital and Baylor Medical Center-Gilmer. She and her husband later owned Bonnie’s Florist in Gilmer and she was active in the Gilmer community. She later worked with her son, William, at Bunn Flowers & Gifts in Pittsburg.
She is survived by her children William Bunn and his wife Rebekah, James Bunn, grandchildren William Bunn II and Bonnye Bunn, Heather Pelton, and husband Daniel Pelton, Brandi Thibodeaux and husband Jesse Thibodeaux, great-grandchildren, Ryan, Stella, Cameron, D.J., Isaac, Madisyn, Ansley and numerous nieces and nephews, brother Alberto Montilla and his wife Chari of the Philippines. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Bunn, and her brother, Luis Montilla of Australia.
