Maria was born December 15, 1963 to the late Richard and Willie Mae Mitchell. Maria united with Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. She was a graduate of Pittsburg High School Class of 1982. Maria was an outstanding athlete and was highly decorated during her athletic career at Pittsburg High School.
Maria furthered her education at East Texas State University/Texas A&M Commerce and graduated with a bachelor’s degree. She was a member of Alpha Angels Inc. and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. She began working for Texas Dept. of Health and Human Services Commission in 1989 and retired in January of 2016 in order to spend quality time with her daughters. Maria returned to the agency in 2021 where she served until her passing.
Maria was the mother of beautiful twin daughters whom she loved and cherished with all of her heart and soul.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her daughters Zaniya and Zaria Mitchell-Smith, two brothers; Rickey Mitchell (Agnes) of Plano, TX; Richard Mitchell Jr. of Ft. Worth, TX, five sisters; Michelle Williams (James) of Pittsburg, TX; Tekilia Campbell (Michael) of Grand Prairie, TX; Kimberley Mitchell of Kilgore, TX; Phaedra Norman of DeSoto, TX; Zelma Morton Durley of Houston, TX; one aunt, Lena Mitchell of Schertz, TX, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
Maria was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers; Kinnard and Ruben Mitchell; sister Cecelia Rider; grandparents; Alton M. and Georgia Mae Mitchell; Grady Ladd and Lucille Ford.
