Norvell Johnson was born June 22, 1949, in Pittsburg, TX. He was the fifth of eight children born to the late Connie Lee Johnson and Clara L. Turner-Johnson.
He attended Frederick Douglass High School in Pittsburg, graduating in 1967. Norvell was active in high school track and field, football and joined the United States Marine Corp shortly after graduation. He proudly served in the Marine Corp for two years including a tour in Vietnam.
After leaving the Service, he returned to Pittsburg, and embarked on a career as a truck driver for Gus Pressley of Mt. Pleasant, Texas and Pilgrim’s Pride of Pittsburg, Texas where he was employed for more than 40 years.
In 1987, he met and married the love of his life (for time and all eternity) Donna Kay Waters. Norvell and Donna enjoyed the peace and quiet of country living on a cattle ranch near Pittsburg, where they lovingly raised Donna’s three children and were blessed with five grandchildren.
He leaves to cherish his memory; his step-daughter, Demitra Waters, of Houston, TX, step-sons, Chris and Antonio Waters, of Pittsburg, TX, five step-grandchildren, three sisters; Billie J. (Louis) Mitchell of Dallas, TX, Joyce A. (Joseph) Watts of Tacoma, WA, and Cherry V. (Clifton) Bailey of Austin, TX; Connie W. Johnson of Flower Mound, TX and Kenneth R. Johnson of Ayer, MA. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father, his loving wife, two brothers, Willie E. Johnson of Longview, TX and Earnest E. Johnson of Leesburg, TX.
He was a quiet, kind hearted, giant of a man, who loved gardening and attending the cattle on his ranch. He was always there with a helping hand for anyone in need. Norvell was baptized and made a confession of Faith at an early age and became a member of Myrtle Springs CME Church, Leesburg, Texas. He gave his all to God, Family, Friends and Country. We know he will be watching over us until we meet again.
